How it all works
Though our hosting of an official page is intended to be as easy as possible, there are some things which we will need before we can do so.
Firstly, in line with our objectives as set out in our constitution, our site is only for the wrongly accused/convicted. Therefore we cannot host official pages for those who’s claim of innocence isn’t credible and wish an official page for other reasons such as poor treatment whilst in prison. These sites should be hosted by those who represent them instead.
Obviously this means that we need to assess the details of each case before we will set up a site to ensure it meets the criteria and that there would be a benefit for the accused/convicted person in doing so. For example, it is not the case that if someone was driven to do something illegal that they are innocent, if the act was done, any mitigating circumstance which exist can be used by their defence team so that their sentence takes them in to account. It does not however make them a wrongly accused or convicted person. Similarly, there are cases where although a person’s claim of innocence is credible, it would be potentially dangerous to them or others if a site were set up.
Secondly, it must be the wrongly accused/convicted person’s own wish to have an official page hosted by us. We will therefore need to communicate with them directly to obtain their instruction to do so (via mail to the prison they are held at if necessary). Once we have received their request to proceed along with details of pages they wish to be included and drafts of any texts to be added we will proceed to set up the site. Copies of them will be sent for their approval before making the site live. While the accused/convicted person may wish to appoint someone to act on their behalf, there will remain some decisions which can only come from the accused/convicted person themselves. Any texts or comments posted which we feel are inappropriate for any reason will need to be either modified before being published or omitted.
Apart from that there really isn’t much to it.
If you wish to make use of this facility, please e-mail admin@wronglyaccusedperson.org.uk and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. We will then be able to advise you what to do next and how long it will take which will depend on the complexity of the case and our current workload.
